Vintage #badgirlcrush – Joi Lansing

Vintage #badgirlcrush – Joi Lansing

With perfect platinum brushed out curls, a bombshell figure and wardrobe any Bad Girl would be proud to own, our vintage #badgirlcrush of the week is the beautiful
Joi Lansing!

“I was always known as a glamour girl, and categorized only as that. It was very limiting… many gals in the industry have more talent than they’re given credit for. My being blond and curvy, you might say, was a kind of mixed blessing.”

Born Joyce Rae Brown in April 1929 in Salt Lake City, Joy was in the whirlwind of Hollywood fame from the tender age of 14 when she was signed to MGM.
Like many young starlets she completed her high school education on the MGM studio lot and in 1952 had an uncredited role in ‘Singin In The Rain’.

Joi appeared in over 37 films during her acting career, and starred in many television series. She learnt from a young age that she was mainly hired for her looks, and any acting talent she possessed was a second thought to the director, much like her contemporaries Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren.

In 1950 she was crowned Miss Hollywood!

Joi was an avid yoga enthusiast, who practised it to help her relax and never drank, smoke or posed nude.

On February 8th 1960 she was awarded a prestigious star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6259 Hollywood Boulevard.

Joi was also noted as the most photographed woman of 1960. During an Actor’s Strike she discovered her singing talent and took the downtime as an opportunity to fine tune her voice.

Joi continued her new found singing career and debuted at the New York Living Room Club, she went onto to become a notorious singer on the nightclub scene in the 60’s, and did a New York Hotel Circuit performing at the Hilton and Waldorf Astoria to name a few!
Joi then cut her first recording album in 1965 for RCA – Victor.

In 1968 she starred as gold-digging Lorelei Lee in an eight week theatre production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Throughout her life Joi was married four times and had noted romances with Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra.

In 1958 Sinatra cast her to appear in his ABC variety show at the El Capitan Theatre and their relationship blossomed from there, she was later cast in ‘A Hole In The Head’ and ‘Marriage On The Rocks’, which was to be her last major studio movie.

Sinatra remained good to Joi and paid for her hospital bills when she was in the last stages of her life with breast cancer, she later passed away in Santa Monica in August 1972.

With her perfect pincurls, beautifully arched brows and rose petal red lips , Joi remains a timeless hollywood pin-up and total Bad Girl to this day.

Measuring 36-23-33, Joi and sweaters were a match made in heaven and like other pin-ups of the era, she championed the Sweater Girl look, here’s how to get the Lansing look with TOBG:

Pair your Golden Heart or Vixen top with short shorts for a perfect summer Bad Girl look, and when the evening cools add cigarette pants for a killer ensemble!

Pour your curves into the Lola top and a pencil skirt for a 9-5 Bad Girl look, or pair with high waisted capris and mules to wiggle the night away! Add a slick of rose petal red lipstick to complete the look!

Don’t forget to add #TOBGSTYLE and #theoriginalbadgirl to your photos so we can see how you channel your inner Joi!

Vintage #Badgirlcrush Elizabeth Taylor

Vintage #Badgirlcrush-  Elizabeth Taylor

With some of the most iconic brows of all time, this week’s #badgirlcrush is the ultimate glamour girl, Elizabeth Taylor!

I feel very adventurous. There are so many doors to be opened and I’m not afraid to look behind them.”

Born in London in 1932 to American parents, Elizabeth moved to California in 1939 to escape the dangers of the outbreak of World War 2.

With those blue eyes that looked violet, friends soon encouraged her parents to get Elizabeth in front of a camera, though her mother was initially uncertain about the idea of children in films, Elizabeth eventually signed a seven year contract with MGM in 1943, and starred in ‘Lassie Come Home’ in the same year.

Elizabeth starred in over 50 films throughout her acting career, and won two Academy Awards for Best Actress. Towards the mid 1970’s she appeared in less films, but remained in the spotlight becoming infamous for her quick wit in interviews, and her two loves ; men and jewellery!

Elizabeth had a record number of eight marriages to seven husbands from 1950 to 1996, each adorning her with more jewels to add to her collection, which at the time of her passing was estimated at over $100 million!

In 2011 Christie’s held a private auction of her jewellery, some pieces sold for more than 50 times their worth just because of the noterity that they were once worn by Elizabeth. The collection set a world record as the most valuable sale of jewelley in history, grossing $120,702,563!

Pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together.”

Elizabeth was a style icon from her early rise to fame, at the start of the 1950’s, she was never too far from beautifully fitted full skirted dresses showcasing her enviable hourglass figure, and her signature red lipstick.

Elizabeth, unlike other stars of time had no interest in hiring a stylist and preferred to buy everything herself from couture designers in Paris and Italy, she kept all of the clothing in pristine condition and labels such as Dior, Chanel and Valentino adorned her wardrobe.

Towards the 1960’s Elizabeth’s style became iconic with those arched brows and feline eyes! Liz liked to be in charge of her own beauty routine and preferred to do her own make up on the set of Cleopatra, those dramatic eyes must have taken some practise!
She noted a good night’s sleep as one of her beauty secrets,
“Honey, you’ll look like hell if you don’t get a good night’s sleep.”
She looked equally amazing in a glamourous cocktail dress, or dressed down in capri pants and a sweater, a total Bad Girl!

Elizabeth remains one of the most iconic superstars of the Hollywood Golden Age, here’s how to get her look with TOBG ;

We're bringing y'all along on some more of our adventures from our last visit.  There are few things better than a good old fashioned milkshake -- so we decided to pop on over to Evans Diner.  It's a little bit farther than our usual food outings, but when you need a diner milkshake... no distance is too far. Let's hear it for hometown favorites.  It was, of course, so humid after about 5 minutes outside we felt like we'd been swimming, so ditched our petticoats and dresses and decided to channel our inner Audrey + Marilyn and wear our some vintage-inspired tops from The Original Bad Girl.  These are some of our new favorite wardrobe pieces since casual, retro-styled tops can sometimes be difficult to find (ot to mention, the stripes are the perfect background for novelty brooches).

This is definitely the summer where we've both embraced shorts + cigarette pants, which makes us feel a little more "edgy and a little less femme" than usual.  It's fun to change it up every once and w a while.  Also, after writing those post, we're not sure if the increased amount of resting bitch face in these photos is because of the weather or because we were channeling our inner-original bad girl.

Vintage #badgirlcrush

Vintage #badgirlcrush – Brigitte Bardot

One of our favourite Original Bad Girls and main influences behind some of our most popular styles (The BB & BLAZE Top), is the one and only iconic french Actress and Model Brigitte Anne Marie Bardot!

Born in Paris in 1934, dancing was a big influence in Brigitte’s childhood. In 1947 she trained as a ballerina for three years, with other dancers affectionately referring to her as ‘Little Doe’ – who could blame them with those big hazel eyes!

In 1949 she modelled for one of her mothers friends in a fashion show, and at age 15 she graced the cover of Elle in 1950.

Brigitte's acting career launched in 1952, she starred in over 47 films and was nominated for a BAFTA for best foreign actress. We love Bardot in The Girl in the Bikini & And God Created Woman

“I knew I had to be the best at something, otherwise I would be nothing. I knew I wanted the world to know about Brigitte Bardot.”

Bardot retired from show business in 1973 and established the Foundation for the Protection of Distressed Animals in the late 70’s igniting her passion as an animal activist.

“I gave my beauty and my youth to men. I am going to give my wisdom and experience to animals.”

She went onto set up the Brigitte Bardot Foundation For The Welfare And Protection Of Animals in 1986, her work led to the Council Of Europe banning the importation of seal fur and the French Government banning the import of Ivory. Bardot remains a prominent animal activist to this day!

Her distinguished style inspired both ends of the fashion spectrum, a classic boat neck T shirt became known internationally as the Bardot top and available from most clothing stores. Bardot has also inspired the high end fashion houses; Isabel Marant focused their Spring 2013 collection on her relaxed beach style, Lancel created the BB bag in 2010 which respects animals and nature having no leather or chemical colouration involved in its production, and Robert Cavalli’s 2008 Spring / Summer collection shown at Milan was largely influenced by Bardot’s role in ‘Viva Maria!’, a true style icon!

Here’s how to channel your inner Bardot with TOBG
A red boatneck top is a timeless classic, perfect for those late summer evening barbeques and cocktails! Try the JD Top in Red or Maroon, or for some extra heat, the fiery red Lurex edition!
Nothing beats blue jeans and a white t shirt, throw on the mystery girl t shirt, your favourite jeans and a messy beehive for a relaxed bardot look!

One of her most iconic looks, a striped t shirt, so effortless tucked into high waisted shorts or capri pants! Get the look with the BB Top in Black & White or Beat Girl Top, perfect for late night twisting!
No Bad Girl look is complete with those iconic hoops, try the FRIDA LAS VEGAS hoops in gold, and why not add the black and red version to your collection!

Don’t forget to add #TOBGSTYLE & #theoriginalbadgirl to your photos so we can see how you channel your inner Bardot!
